California bill would allow kids to have multiple parents

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO -

Pending legislation in California would allow children to have multiple parents, and child advocates in San Diego are behind it.  FOX5SanDiego.com reports that the bill is co-sponsored by University of San Diego Law School professor Robert Fellmeth, and if it's signed into law, it would allow children-- especially those with divorced or non-biological parents-- to legally have more than 2 parents.

"In a perfect world every child would have two parents, nobody would die, nobody would get divorced," Fellmeth told FOX5SanDiego.com

The website reports Fellmeth says the growing number of divorces and second-marriage families have left many kids caught in the midst of complicated custody battles.  Fellmeth says he believes if a child can potentially receive benefits from three parent figures legally, than he or she should.

The law currently limits children to having only two parents legally.

Senate Bill 1476 has plenty of opponents,
FOX5SanDiego.com reports, especially on the conservative religious front.  According to the website, Pastor Chris Clarke at East Clairemont Southern Baptist says the bill promotes instability for children in custody battles by dividing them between multiple parents.

Supporters of the bill say it is not meant to redefine who qualifies to be a parent, but instead to eliminate the limit of two parents per child.

FOX5SanDiego.com reports the bill has already passed the California Senate, and is now headed to the Assembly, where it is also expected to pass.
