ATLANTA -

Peachtree Road Race runners beware! The annual Independence Day tradition is under a heat alert.

Much like the homeland security agency's color code system, participants will be made aware when heat conditions become too hot to compete.

Race director Tracy Russell announced on Monday that they've implemented an event alert system throughout the world famous 10K course.

Colored flags ranging from green, yellow, red, and black that indicate good conditions to extremely dangerous will be up for runners to see.

Black means the event will be stopped.

Russell says they'll start the race at yellow, but urges runners to pay close attention to the colored flags on the course.
