ATLANTA -

The record-breaking heat continued Sunday with the official temperature in Atlanta hitting 105 degrees. It may have been a degree cooler than Saturday's record-setting high, but all anyone who ventured outside noticed was that it was hot.

Turner Field temperature

The Atlanta Braves wrapped up their series against the Washington Nationals with another afternoon game. The game posed a challenge with temperatures hitting 105 degrees on the field during the game.

Fans took advantage of special cooling stations set up throughout the park to help keep them hydrated. FOX 5 crews saw many fans having to actually leave the ballpark early because of the heat.

Checking on senior citizens

Members of a local church braved the triple digit temperatures to check on area residents who may be suffering in the oppressive heat.

Led by Reverend Clinton McFarland, members of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church went door to door in south Atlanta. The pastor tells FOX 5 News they were especially concerned about senior citizens living in older homes that might not have any cooling systems.
They also handed out fans to residents who needed them. Monday, Mount Pleasant church in Atlanta will offer a cooling station at the church. It will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Splashing away the heat

The city of Atlanta made sure all its pools opened Sunday as part of the ongoing efforts this weekend to keep residents cool. Seven city pools didn't charge anything to get into the water. It is the second day the city gave residents easy access to pools.

A hot new city

The heat did not stop families in Gwinnett County from welcoming its newest and largest city. Residents came out to the Peachtree Corners Festival this weekend to celebrate the new city despite the heat.

Sunday, it became Gwinnett County's 16th city. The city is made up of over 34,000 residents.
