SAVANNAH, Ga. -
The bishop of the Roman-Catholic Diocese of Savannah is leading an outdoor Mass to celebrate religious freedoms and to protest what the church sees as government attacks on those freedoms.
Diocese officials say they expect as many as 1,000 faithful Sunday for the Mass in Savannah's Forsyth Park. It will be led by Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer.
Catholic groups across the U.S. have been holding prayer vigils, rallies and other events to protest what they see as government intrusion on their faith. The immediate target of bishops is the mandate President Barack Obama announced in January that most employers -- including religious organizations -- provide health insurance that covers birth control.
Hartmayer said in a May 25 letter he fears government policies pose a "direct threat" to religious liberties.
