Ga. police agency gets a hovercraft -- for free

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -

A coastal Georgia police agency has a new tool for beach patrols that didn't cost taxpayers a penny -- a hovercraft that was donated by its owner.

Glynn County Police Capt. Jay Wiggins says he spotted the hovercraft by the road recently with a for-sale sign on it and called the owner. When Larry Credle, a former civil defense worker, heard the police wanted the vehicle, he gave it to the county.

The Florida Times-Union reports police wanted the hovercraft for beach patrols because it can travel on both sand and water.

Police Chief Matt Doering says that should be easier for officers than launching personal watercraft from the beach.
