DNR urges safety while boating

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Boating safety will be a top priority as thousands of boaters are expected to take to the lakes over the July 4 holiday, and the Department of Natural Resources has a few warnings for water-lovers.

According to the DNR, last year there were 121 incidents on Georgia waters, resulting in 77 injuries and 15 fatalities. Authorities say many of them could have been prevented by following the rules.

DNR officers say wearing a life jacket is the first step to ensuring a safe boating trip.

"You know, with the life jacket law, the way it is in Georgia, children under the age of 10 have to be in a life jacket all the time. But we encourage everyone to wear their life jacket all the time," said Officer Brooks Varnell of the DNR.

Boater Steve Abad says for his young passengers, vests are mandatory.

"Life jackets are like seat belts, so it's a given that they have their life jackets on," said Abad.

Varnell says alcohol still seems to be the number one way people celebrate.

"When it's warm outside, people, you know, they come to the lake, it's just something that they feel like they got to have is an alcoholic beverage. Unfortunately, it leads to bad things happening," said Varnell.

Recently, Paul Bennett was charged with operating under the influence after the boat he was driving plowed into a pontoon boat, killing two young boys.

DNR officers say it's a good idea to check your lights if you'll be boating after dark. They also say to obey water courtesy when it's busy and take it slow.

"Out here on the water, it's just like on the highway. You should always pass on your right-hand side. Same with the lake," said Varnell.

The DNR says make sure you get your boat registered before you hit the water. For more information on boating safety, click here.
