ATLANTA -

Atlanta police say one of their own was involved in a fatal shooting in southwest Atlanta on Wednesday night. The shooting took place at the Mall West End at around 8:40 p.m. near Oak and Lee Streets, according to authorities.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Atlanta police officers received information that a Mississippi fugitive was sitting in a black Chevrolet Suburban in the mall parking lot. The fugitive had several warrants out for his arrest on drug and theft related charges.

The person was shot and killed during the arrest attempt by APD officers, the GBI said.  That person has not been identified.

APD spokesman John Chafee said no Atlanta police officers were injured in the shooting.

The GBI is investigating at the request of Atlanta's police chief, George Turner. The GBI will turn over the results of their investigation to the Fulton County District Attorney.
