Changes coming to Ga. driver's license renewals

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Changes are on the way when it comes to renewing your driver's license in the state of Georgia.  They'll go into effect next month, and that means more paperwork for drivers the next time they renew.

The state says the new rules are aimed at protecting the public by ensuring the integrity of driver's licenses. The state already requires documents when applying for your first driver's license or ID card, but as of next month, drivers will have to provide those records any time they renew their license or apply for reinstatement.

The Department of Driver Services says it is prepared to accommodate more people at their customer service centers starting next month.  Drivers can prove their identity with an original or certified copy of their birth certificate, or a valid U.S. passport.

A full list of documents that can be used to fulfill the requirement can be found on the Department of Driver Services' website.

Once you renew your license in person one time, you'll be able to renew it online the next time.  Current driver's licenses and ID cards are still valid until their expiration date.
