FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Fulton County police say they're still searching for a hit-and-run driver responsible for killing a 5-year-old girl on Tuesday afternoon. They say Ja'Leah Felix was crossing Campbellton Road near Boat Rock Road when she was hit.

Police say the accident happened around 5 p.m., and that little Ja'Leah was with her aunt and four sisters at the time.  Her aunt lives across the street from Sandtown Park, where they were headed when Ja'Leah was hit.  Family members tell FOX 5 Ja'Leah walked ahead of them and didn't wait for them before crossing the street.

According to police, Ja'Leah lost her shoe in the road, and she was hit when she went back to get it.  She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was first listed in critical condition.  The Fulton County Medical Examiner later confirmed she had died.

Investigators are actively searching for the driver of a black or very dark Ford extended-cab pickup truck.  They say they're still trying to figure out if the driver knew they had hit Ja'Leah before leaving the scene of the accident.

Ja'Leah lived in College Park with her father and stepmother.  Her mother is in the military, and she's stationed in Colorado.  Family members say she arrived in Atlanta on Wednesday afternoon to begin making funeral arrangements for her little girl.

Ja'Leah's family released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon:
"The family of Ja'Leah Felix would like to thank everyone for their sympathy and words of encouragement.  Ja'Leah was our angel and she will never be forgotten.  Our hearts are broken, but we are faithful that the person who was driving the vehicle that struck and killed her will come forward on their own and allow us to truly begin our mourning and healing process. If there is anyone who knows anything to help investors with this case, please call (404) 612-3001."

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Fulton County Police Department immediately.  They say it's possible the driver could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
