LITHONIA, Ga. -

A soldier from Lithonia is back in the United States after he was injured in Afghanistan last week.  The parents of Sgt. Daniel Saunders say he was involved in a firefight on his base.

The Saunders have two sons serving the U.S. Army, and both of them are currently deployed.  Their mother, Ulanda, says she lives day by day, and she was terrified when she got a call from the Department of Defense early last Tuesday morning.  Their father, Roy, told FOX 5 they braced for bad news.

"When it's coming from the Department of Defense at 4 or 5 something in the morning, it was hard," he said.

Mr. Saunders say she was relieved when he learned his son had only been injured.  Sgt. Saunders was shot in the ankle as he was getting ready to leave the base in Kandahar on a mission.  His dad says insurgents got on base and attacked his son and another soldier.

The 25-year-old earned a Purple Heart, and he's now recovering in Seattle, Washington.  His mom is anxiously waiting to book a flight to see him.  She says in their first conversation after the accident, he told her he wanted her to know he was okay.

Sgt. Saunders is stationed at Fort Lewis, and this was his third deployment.  His family says he's now healing.
