Car care tips: Things to know before a road trip

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For some families, taking a summer road trip is a tradition! Besides the packing and reservations, there is one more thing to take care of before hitting the road in your car. Car care expert Eddie Ehlert visited Good Day with tips to make sure your vehicle is road ready!

Things a vehicle owner can do:

1. Keep all of your car maintenance up to date!

2. Monitor where you park and pay attention to any fluids other than fresh, clear water.

3. Monitor your tire pressure (the right pressure should be on a label on the driver's door or is in the owner's manual) and keep them up to normal. When preparing for a trip, a couple of extra pounds may improve fuel economy without impairing anything. Visually examine the tires for tread thickness and consistency. Slick spots, lumps on the tread or sidewall, and alligator skin patterns on the tread indicate problems that may require immediate attention.

4. If your wipers smudge when it's raining, replace them or notify your service provider. Check your windshield washers on occasion and if they don't work, let your service provider know.

5. Turn on the lights and walk around the car. Have someone depress the brake pedal and see that all the brake lights illuminate (the ignition may need to be turned on for the brake lights to function). Some bulbs are easy to replace while some require removal of substantial components to access.

6. If you  look under the hood, notice any moist areas or corrosion buildup. Look at any belts for any fraying on the edges.

Despite age and mileage, a well maintained vehicle is probably safe to go anywhere you want to drive it.

Does your summer road trip include mouth-watering stops at mom-and-pop eateries?  Ours does, and it'll be even better with the help of a new Southern Living book!
Off the Eaten Path: Second Helpings is dedicated to finding the best meals in the south-- and it features some great restaurants right here in north Georgia.  Good Day's Paul Milliken checked out two of those gems-- The Hil in Serenbe, and Weaver D's in Athens!  As usual, he didn't leave hungry.
