Albany wants to sell housing used for homeless

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, Ga. -

Albany officials plan to change the way the city provides emergency shelter for homeless families.

The Albany Herald reports the city plans to sell the two, 15-unit buildings it uses for temporary housing and instead give homeless families vouchers that allow them to stay in under-booked area hotels.

City officials plan two public hearings on July 12 to explain the changes.

Latoya Cutts, director of the city Community and Economic Development Department, says Albany officials felt families getting emergency shelter needed to be placed in a more secure area than the neighborhood where the city-owned housing units are located.
