GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

A home in Gwinnett County is preparing for a big move. The Chesser-Williams home, dating back to the 1800s, is one of the oldest surviving homes in the county.

The old structure is located off Braselton Highway. For 77-year-old Jerald Williams, it was home.

"Didn't think nothing about it, it was just a home. Back then everybody was farmers. You either plowed the ground or you starved to death. One or the other. Everybody was poor back in those days," said Williams.

Jason West of the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center says the home was built prior to 1850. Many aspects of the home have held up remarkably well. The home has been in the Williams family since 1925. Before that, it belonged to the Chesser family.

In the late 1800s, a German folk artist painted in the home in exchange for room and board. His rare paintings are still intact inside. West says the artist seemed to have fun, pointing out in one of the paintings that an apple had a bite taken out of it.

Williams and his wife recently donated the home to Gwinnett County. It will soon be moved to the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center.

"So the home will tell a story of Gwinnett's past and the region's past. We'll be able to talk about life in agrarian Georgia, life in the frontier of Georgia and we'll also be able to interpret and analyze this artwork. So there are lots of lessons to be learned from this home," said West.

Contractors will first disassemble the home in three sections, then move it to the heritage center. It will take nine months and about $320,000 to complete. The money is coming from a combination of grants and SPLOST funds. For more information on the Chesser-Williams house, visit www.gwinnettehc.org.
