CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities say one man is dead following a police-involved shooting in front of a park off of Mount Zion Road in Clayton County late Wednesday night.

According to investigators, an officer pulled over a gray 2009 Toyota Corolla with five men inside at around 10:43 p.m. A check of the occupants in the car showed that one of them was wanted on GCIC files.

Clayton County police say an officer asked the occupants to exit the vehicle. As they began to pat down the suspect, he started to struggle and pulled out a gun. He began shooting, hitting the driver of the vehicle in the abdomen.

Police say the suspect then turned the weapon on the officers and fired. One officer returned fire in self-defense. The suspect died at the scene. They say one of the officers sustained minor injuries during the struggle but that no officers were shot.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Police say his injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Police say one of the men in the car fled and police detained two others. They say they have no description of the man who fled.

The investigation is being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
