Hundreds of people gathered on Wednesday to stand up against youth violence in DeKalb County. The summit was held at the same church where two people were recently shot and killed.
For many attendees at the Victory for the World Church, the youth violence summit was personal.
Malik Archible's 19-year-old son Isaiah was shot and killed after being robbed just three weeks ago.
"I'm here so Isaiah's life won't be in vain and that we're going to make a noise for him so that it will be heard," said Archible.
The summit was held at the same location where two young men were killed at funeral for a murder victim two weeks ago.
"The story is we are not victims. The story is that we are overcomers," said DeKalb County CEO Burnell Ellis.
Carlos Henderson, 19, was one of the men shot and killed at that funeral. Members of his family were at Wednesday's meeting.
"There are not enough words to express the pain my family feels right now," said one member of Henderson's family.
Henderson's brother, Harrison Benton, got back last month from serving in Iraq, where not a single member of his unit died. Days after returning home, he lost his little brother to violence.
"It's the people who are not here who we need to reach and I think we just need to be creative and think outside the box to bring them in," said Benton.
Attendees hope to take the message from the church and into the street.
