GILMER COUNTY, Ga. -

A north Georgia man is recovering after being bit by a copperhead snake.

Austin Tilson came in contact with the poisonous snake while on a hike with his young daughters on Sunday.

"We went to the creek Sunday afternoon for Father's Day, me and my wife and two girls," said Tilson.

Tilson says his young daughters and wife must have stepped right over the snake, but he was walking behind them at a swimming spot near Ellijay.

"I didn't even feel it when it bit me the first time, and it popped me twice. Then the second time it was like a really big bee sting," said Tilson.

In only took a second to realize it was no bee, but a copperhead.

"I sprung back around to look what it was and I realized I'd been snake bit," he said.

At first, Tilson said that doctors were worried he could lose his foot.

"Snakes really hadn't ever bothered me until I got bit. Now I'm like, ‘the only good snake's a dead one,'" said Tilson.

Now moved from the ICU to a regular room at the North Georgia Medical Center, Tilson says he wants other people to be on watch for copperheads.

"Keep a close eye on your surroundings because a copperhead, it'll blend in with the ground and you'll never see it," said Tilson.

Tilson says he's glad that the copperhead bit him instead of his little girls.
