Foul play not suspected in deadly Lithonia fire

Posted: Updated:
LITHONIA, Ga. -

Fire crews are working to determine what caused a fire that claimed the life of a Lithonia father and his 4-year-old son on Tuesday night.  Investigators said Wednesday that they do not believe foul play was involved, but it may be weeks before they learn what sparked the deadly blaze.

Darryl Stewart and his son, Darryl Nathan Stewart, were found down in a car that caught fire at a home on Wellborn Hills Place.

DeKalb Fire Rescue officials say they have no reason to think that the fire was suspicious.  Police say they are not ruling it as anything criminal.

Meanwhile, neighbors who witnessed the blaze are stunned.  Some who saw it say the fire started just as the father hit the remote control to his garage and pulled inside.

Some neighbors tried to help, but ended up watching in horror as the house burned.  Roderick Shepard said some people broke out windows in the home, not knowing the father and son were still in the car inside the garage.

Other neighbors reported hearing a loud pop before the fire sparked.

Victoria Jackson said her and other neighbors fled as the fire spread from the car to the home.

The now-charred home where the family lived is a total loss.  Heat from the fire also smoldered part of a house next door.  A second car at the house was also burned.

Investigators believe the fire started in the car the father was driving, but they say they're not sure how.  They say it could be weeks before they are able to determine the cause.
