Boating after dark and drinking while boating can be dangerous for everyone on board. At least one person was killed and a teenager was missing after an accident on Lake Lanier late Monday night.
The driver of the boat, 44-year-old Paul J. Bennett, faces a boating under the influence charge in the incident.
Department of Natural Resources Sgt. Greg Colson said that alcohol often plays a factor in boating accidents.
Colson said that people have a more carefree attitude when boating as comparing to driving a car.
The number of DNR rangers assigned to Lake Lanier has been cut in half in the last 10 years. Today, around seven DNR rangers are assigned to the lake.
"Obviously, having a presence on the lake influences how people operate and influences their actions on the lake," said Colson.
Unlike a car, an adult doesn't require safety training or a license to drive a boat.
DNR officials say there have been three fatalities on Lake Lanier this year. All occurred at night and involved boats.
