ATLANTA -

Retail gasoline prices continue to fall every week, but prices remain different depending on the location.

At one QuikTrip in Newton County on Tuesday, regular gas was $3.22 a gallon.

"They are going down and it makes sense to buy a small car so that you can take advantage of these low prices and travel more this summer," said Marlene Jackson.

According to AAA auto club group, Georgia's average price of $3.26 a gallon is a decrease of 4 cents a gallon from last week. The group says that signs point toward continued decreases in pump prices in coming weeks. Part of that is due to the result of lower expectations from manufacturing and consuming spending.

But as the average retail cost falls, disparities in gas prices remain.

AtlantaGasPrices.com posted some of the lowest prices at just over $3 a gallon near I-85 in Duluth while some of the highest were at about $3.80 in Stockbridge, Marietta and Atlanta.

Jim Tudor of the Georgia Association of Convenience Stores says that in addition to localized competition, price differences can be attributed to the timing of wholesale gas purchases and local government sales tax rates.

"And because the local motor fuel tax rates, or the sales tax rates, vary in the metro area from 2 to 4 percent, that can impact the retailers' cost up to 6 cents a gallon.

As for neighboring states, Georgia's average gas price is about 9 cents higher than the average in Tennessee and 6 cents lower than Florida.

Overall, gas prices in the southeast are well below the national average of $3.50 a gallon.
