MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

Friends, family and complete strangers came together on Monday at a McDonough church to remember a soldier killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Army Pfc. Brandon Goodine, 20, was fatally wounded by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan.

During the service, fellow soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division gave details about how Goodine died.

As friends and family gathered inside to remember the young soldier, another scene played itself out on the streets of his hometown as strangers said they wanted to show support for the fallen soldier's family.

"We had to be here.  There's nothing we could do to repay him.  He left a 3-year-old daughter behind, a wife, a mother, a father -- a lot of family members and friends.  It's so much," said Jane Lowe.

Inside the church, they talked not only about that devoted husband and father but about the sacrifice he made for his country.

"It broke our heart.  He's one of our family there, I miss him and I appreciate his sacrifice for our country.  I appreciate his family.  A lot of people say I know what you're going through and I don't.  I just know we're hurting with them and we're praying for the family," said pastor Brian Hosmer.

"All I think about are these families and these wonderful people who make these sacrifices overseas so the rest of us can live in peace," said Tom Sileo.

One mourner who spoke to members of the family says they also want people to pray for other soldiers serving with Goodine who were wounded in the same attack.
