Former SCLC says he was fired without warning

ATLANTA (AP) - The former president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference says he was dismissed from the civil rights group without warning or a chance to rebut any reasons for his ouster.

Isaac Farris spoke publicly Monday for the first time since the board dismissed him in April from the organization co-founded by his uncle, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and called for unity.

Farris held back tears as he spoke of his life's mission to serve God and the less fortunate. A dozen supporters joined him at a news conference.

Farris said he was dismissed because of "false truths and outright lies," but didn't elaborate on what the lies were.

Some members and leaders of the SCLC are calling for Farris' reinstatement. C.T. Vivian is the current president of SCLC.
