ATLANTA -

The city of Atlanta is set to pay upset water customers settlements worth nearly $500,000.

The residents were upset after faulty meters resulted in high water bills. Buckhead resident John Benator retained an attorney after he says his bills quadrupled to $1,200.

"The first thing I did was check for a water leak. That wasn't a problem. Then discovered that the meter was incorrect," Benator said.

Under the orders of Mayor Kasim Reed, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management used an outside company to audit the entire system.

"The people that installed, changed the meters had installed the wrong ones," said Benator.

Benator is among the residents set to receive $480,000 in a settlement. The exact number of people involved in the settlement has not been released.

Atlanta City Council must approve the settlement.
