Authorities say two 5-year-old girls drowned in a backyard swimming pool on Sunday in Paulding County.
It happened on Mirage Drive in the Lavista Lakes subdivision in Dallas. Police said the Juarez family left their daughter Sophia with a 58-year-old caregiver and her granddaughter, Mia Penoyer, while they went to a grocery store.
The caregiver had a 45 minute phone conversation with a friend, according to Sgt. Bill Gorman of the Dallas Police Department.
When the Juarez family returned, the caregiver thought that the children were in an upstairs room. However, the children could not be located in the house. The Juarez's 10-year-old then went to the backyard and discovered the two children at the bottom of the pool, Gorman said.
Police said there were no witnesses.
Gorman said the caregiver – whose name has not been released – will face charges of reckless conduct, a misdemeanor.
