Snellville plans huge benefit for Aimee Copeland

Posted: Updated:
SNELLVILLE, Ga. -

The city of Snellville is gearing up for another big benefit aimed at helping Aimee Copeland.  This weekend, they'll host "Aimee's Weekend," a two-day event filled with live music and entertainment at Snellville Towne Green.

Copeland contracted flesh-eating bacteria following a zip lining accident in May.  As a result, she has lost multiple limbs and continues to recover at Doctors Hospital of Augusta.

Aimee's father, Andy Copeland, says she should be moved from intensive care to the facility's rehabilitation center in a few weeks.

Her story has captured the hearts of thousands locally, and those who know her in Snellville, where she lives.  She is a graduate of South Gwinnett High School, and a student at the University of West Georgia.

City officials say they're dedicating this weekend's Sizzlin' Snellville Summer Weekend to Aimee.

"We know they are going to be in need of a lot of financial aid and we'd like to help do as much as we can," said Kelly McAloon of the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association.

The party will get started on Friday night at 5 p.m.  Musical entertainment will include Jordan Rager, The Elements of Style, and Banks and Shane.  On Saturday, there's more where that came from as Corey Durkin, Brandon Whitley, The Hero Band, and Thad Clark and the Dam Band will all perform.  Football great David Greene will also be signing autographs, with donations going to Copeland.

"It all has just happened so quickly and everybody has jumped in and given 100 percent effort and it's been great to see the community bond together for that family," said Don Britt of the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association.

There's no charge for admission, but there will be plenty of ways to donate to Aimee's cause.  Those who attend can make a donation to write a message to Aimee on a banner, or tape a personal video message for her.

All proceeds from the weekend's event will go to Aimee's family.
