SMYRNA, Ga. -

A Smyrna church is celebrating a significant birthday. The Log Cabin Community Church, located on Log Cabin Road, has survived war and fought a street-widening project.

They've made it 100 years with the help and the support of the community.

Judy Whitfield is a member of the church. She says the first Sunday service started on June 2nd, 1912. The 43 families who attended that service had to bring something to sit on. The church didn't have enough chairs.

The one room church started as a Sunday school. Log Cabin Drive was dirt-covered Dixie Highway at the time. Local residents were too far from the churches in town, so they decided to worship together.

"There were no denominational lines. No exclusion on sex or race or gender and everyone came and everyone worshipped together," said Whitfield.

Down through the years, the humble church became an integral part of the community,

"We had a ladies aid group. We had a band. They played baseball at Georgia Tech," Whitfield said.

The church eventually built another, only slightly bigger log cabin structure. They completed work in 1949 on a stone chapel where all modern day services are held. It was at that time they became known for a specific type of service.

Now, they're known as the wedding church. They host more than 60 weddings a year.

"It is one where the family feels very close to the service. Your not removed from [the] big, long altar area. It's a very close and comfortable place to be married," said Whitfield.

Couples love the scenic grounds of the historic plot of land, including a cozy reception hall.  It's used by the community for dance classes, camps and any meeting needing space. It's proof that even 100 years later, Log Cabin Community Church hasn't strayed one bit from it's original intent.

"But it really is a place for people to worship god according to the dictates of their own heart," offered Whitfield.

The Log Cabin Community Church successfully fought a road widening project some years back, guaranteeing they'll stay the same for the next 100 years.

For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
