They're called the lazy, hazy days of summer but educators say it's not the time to let your child's education take a vacation. It's easy to get your kids in the pool, but getting them to read might be more of a challenge.
Imagine That! is a summer camp that combines education and recreation. Experts say all children experience some form of learning loss when not engaged in educational activities during the summer months. It's also called brain drain.
"They actually get to build a robot, get on the computer and program it to do tasks. Rocket ships and dinosaurs and volcanoes, blasting them off. They have all kinds of hands on activities," said Kelly Williams of Imagine That!
Williams says the camp helps the children stay sharp during the summer.
"We get to interact with technology that we've never done before. It's kind of like a mix between a Lego and a computer. You put those together and you get robots," said camper Jake May.
The kids at the Imagine That! camp also get plenty of outside time. Experts recommend a good mix. Incorporating play and learning is the key. If you can't get your kids to an educational summer camp, educators say create your own activities. It will be worth it when school starts again.
"They can take them for walks in the woods. There are lots of websites that have hands-on science that are geared towards parents that they can do little experiments for science. Or take them outside and let them draw. Give them pencil and paper if nothing else. Just get them actively involved," said Williams.
Experts say at the very least your student needs to be reading during the summer. Reading helps with all subjects. Book stores sell what's called Summer Bridge workbooks. They bridge skills learned in the last grade with what they'll be learning in the next grade. For more information on Imagine That!, click here.
