Some Decatur residents are upset over increased property assessments that will likely lead to higher taxes.
Ed and Gloria Jacobson have lived in the Lamont-Vidal neighborhood of Decatur for 33 years. Over the three decades, they've renovated the 1900 square foot as the property value has increase several times.
They said the most recent tax appraisal raised the value of their home by $40,000.
"A lot of people were surprised. I expected tax assessments to go up, but not as much as it did for me," said Jacobson.
Jacobson said a lot of his neighbors are upset that appraisals are up in a declining real estate market.
DeKalb County Chief Appraiser Calvin Hicks said that residents can appeal assessments that they disagree with.
"As errors are discovered, we review that and revise," said Hicks.
Hicks said that homeowners have 45 days to appeal. The appeals can be filed online.
