Barnesville man building 240-square foot home for family

Posted: Updated:

A man in Barnesville has joined the tiny house movement picking up steam across the country.

Andrew Odom is designing his home to look like a beach cottage. The 240 square-foot home will house Odom's family of three in September.

"We both had great success in our careers, and we've had things, but ultimately it just ended up being a thing – a very disposable thing at that," said Odom. "And so, we've kind of re-prioritized that we want each of our moments to really focus on our relationship with each other."

Odom and his wife began planning for the home after they search for a traditional family home. They were approved for a mortgage that was much higher than they thought they could afford.

"We immediately starting looking at other options – what we could do in terms of maintaining our financial freedom and not being caught in a mortgage that was, one day, just going to bite us back," said Odom.

The home will have a gourmet kitchen on one side, a master bedroom (including queen-size bed) on the other end and in-between will be a living space and room for their crib.

"It'll pretty much be a nook in the bedroom. Pretty traditional, it'll just be a little more compact," said Odom.

Odom said the house will cost them around $12,000. He said sponsors donated some materials. They said they will be able to add on the home as their family expands.
