Offers pour in to help puppy thrown from car

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

An injured puppy from the metro area has become an internet sensation.

Thousands of people responded to help or adopt Dozer, the 3-month-old boxer that someone tossed out of a moving car in Clayton County last week.

Maria Dorough, who saved Dozer from being euthanized, says the puppy is making an incredible recovery.

"I saw this little dog when I didn't think he was going to make it," Dorough said.

Maria is with Partners for Pets, animal rescue group that works with the Clayton County Animal Shelter.  A worker asked Maria to take a look at Dozer when he was first brought into the shelter and only minutes away from being put down.

"But I said, ‘let me take him to the vet, let me see if there is any chance,'" said Maria.

Now with the care of doctors from McDonough Animal Hospital, Dozer is on the mend. Thousands of people from all over the country who have heard his sad tale have either donated money for his vet bills or have asked to adopt him.  It will take a special home.

"We will be very strict about who adopts him.  They will have to have previous experience, fenced-in yard, he will have to be kept inside.  There will just be a lot of screening that we will do," said Dorough.

Animal control officers continue to investigate, but so far no one has been charged with throwing Dozer from the car window.  The asphalt acted like a long stretch of sandpaper and removed the pads from his front paws and skinned his back legs all the way to the bone.  There is still the risk for infection, so continued care is necessary.

"This is one that we were able to save, but it doesn't always turn out this well," said Dorough.

Adoption and donation information for Dozer can be found at the McDonough Animal Hospital at 770-957-3927, or email Maria Dorough at jmdoro@earthlink.net.
