LOCUST GROVE, Ga. -

The northbound lanes of Interstate 75 reopened around 8 p.m. Saturday, nearly seven hours after being closed for a tractor trailer fire.

A spokesperson for the Henry County Fire Department tells FOX 5 News that a fully-loaded, 48-foot tractor trailer carrying about 100,000 pounds of compressed cotton caught fire around 1:15 p.m. Saturday. The fire spread to grass and brush on the side of the highway.

Firefighters spent the evening using a equipment to unload the cotton and pour water onto the burning bales.

Officials are investigating how the blaze started.

Several fire engines and emergency officials including brush trucks and equipment from Georgia Forestry worked the scene for several hours.

The road reopened around 8 p.m., but traffic remained slow-moving along Interstate 75 and several detours in Locust Grove for about hour.
