There was a major milestone on Tuesday in the recovery of the 24-year-old University of West Georgia graduate student battling flesh-eating bacteria.
Friends say Aimee Copeland sat up for the first time.
Aimee is now off the ventilator and breathing on her own after having both of her hands amputated as well as her left leg at the hip and her right foot.
Corey Durkin, a Connecticut singer who wrote a song about Aimee, said she was in good spirits after meeting with her on Tuesday.
"She was bopping around the whole time," said Corey. "She shines, you see all the tubes and the stuff beeping and you don't see any of that you just see her, her energy really comes out."
He says while Aimee couldn't speak, he read her lips, and they communicated that way between songs.
"She was sitting up for the first time and alert and awake," said Durkin.
Corey said that he wrote the song for Aimee after reading her dad's blog about her condition. Corey didn't even know Aimee, but her dad says the song captures her entire spirit.
Corey played the song again at a fundraiser for Aimee in Carrollton. Many people from the community came out for the entertainment, the raffle, and silent auction.
" The outpouring from around the world has been incredible," said Gary Duke of the Sunnyside Café, where Aimee worked before contracting the dangerous bacteria after an injury on a zip line.
Dozens were wearing shirts for Aimee designed by close friend, Jesse Duke.
"I was going for the Superman look on the front because she stands for that kind of power for all of us," said Jesse Duke.
That power that has touched many people, not just those who personally know her, such as Corey Durkin, who was touched so deeply by her story, that he put his feelings to words and music.
There are two more fundraisers for Aimee Copeland planned for this weekend.
One is Saturday night from 7 to 11 at the Sunnyside Cafe in Carrollton.
The other is Saturday night in Athens at 8 at the 40 Watt Club. That even will feature live music. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds will go towards Aimee Copeland.
