What do you do with the old toilet when you upgrade to a newer one? Before you stick it in the back yard and make it a planter, check out a Gwinnett County program that takes care of your porcelain problem while saving the environment.
"Toilet King" Bill Hallman has seen every type of toilet they make. As the overseer of Gwinnett County's toilet recycle program, he doesn't mind talking about toilets. In the county, an old toilet means money in your pocket and less waste in surrounding landfills.
"Not everybody and their brother wants the name of "Toilet King." It just kind of stuck with me," said Hallman.
If you bring your old, inefficient toilet, the county will give you a $100 credit on your water bill and dispose of it for you. It's all an effort to conserve water and save residents from paying high water bills.
"Now instead of taking three and four gallons to flush a toilet and you multiply that by two or three toilets, you really don't realize how much water you're going through," said Hallman.
Since the program started more than 11,000 toilets have been upgraded and recycled. Francis Rivas, who is serving his community service hours for a crime he committed, crushes the old toilets.
"It's easier than you think. It's like putting a blade through butter," said Rivas.
The plastic parts of the toilet are separated and recycled. The porcelain is made into useful material like decorative stone or pipe bedding, ensuring nothing gets flushed down the toilet.
You can recycle up to two toilets per household and you have to get them to the water department. You also need to provide receipts for your new toilets. For more information on the program, click here.

We all get excited about leaving town and going on vacation, so we tend to tell everyone about it. But, a word of caution before spreading the good news.
