Shopping at a thrift store is a good way to add items to your wardrobe at a great price. But how do you know what to buy? One expert says the key is patience.
The Perimeter Goodwill Store is Keren Charles' shopping playground.
Charles, a stylist with Two Stylish Kays, finds her buys exclusively at thrift stores. She says you can do the same, but patience is required.
"Don't think you're going to just rush in and get everything. You're going to take a lot of time, but the best part is that you're going to save money," said Charles.
Charles says before shopping at a thrift store, wear the right clothes.
"Some stores don't have dressing rooms, so to avoid the long wait, I always suggest wearing a thrifting uniform," explained Charles.
A thrifting uniform is tights and a close-fitting top. It allows you to try on clothes without getting undressed. Only then are you ready to hit the racks.
"The first thing that you want to do is find out what the sales are. Even though the prices are as low as they can possibly get, they do offer additional discounts," said Charles.
Goodwill uses a color tag system. After determining the sales, go through each rack and simply look for your style.
Charles says to check the merchandise before you purchase it. Make sure all the buttons are present and look for stains. You also also want to make sure it is something you like and will wear once you buy it.
She says thrifts stores are a good way to buy trendy clothing, like Armani, at an extremely low price.
"Some days you're going to find a lot of great deals. It will be amazing. And then some days, you may not walk out with anything. So if you just keep that in mind, then you're going to have a good experience," said Charles.
