Whether it's a pastime, an addiction, or a necessity, Pew research shows more than 70 percent of us shop online. And big savings are available out there. You just need to find them.
When you're checking out online you'll see a box where you can fill in a promotional code. And if you leave that box blank, you could be missing out on a discount.
"Millions of people use online coupons when they shop online and when they do they save an average of 10 percent to 25 percent off what it is they're buying," said consumer expert Richard Warner.
Sarah Platte works with three websites that compile these discounts in one place: www.promotionalcodes.com, www.promocodes.com, and www.couponwinner.com. Platte's company negotiates with businesses to offer these deals in return for a portion of the sale. And it could mean savings for you on house wares, clothing, and even travel.
"There's significant savings you can find, up to $500 off just by using a promotional code," said Sarah Platte.
Other sites recommended by Richard Warner include: www.retailmenot.com, and www.dealcatcher.com. He also suggests a couple of other ways to find the codes.
"If you're window shopping for deals [and] you don't know what you want, go to Google and type in ‘online coupon codes.' If you know what you're looking for, type in the name of the product and then the words ‘online coupon' and if there is a coupon you'll find it," said Warner.
But before you use a code Platte and Warner each have some words of advice: read the fine print on when the coupon expires, how much you have to spend to get the deal, and how much the shipping and tax adds to your total.
"The real question you gotta ask yourself is do you need what it is they're selling. If you don't, you're really not saving any money at all," said Warner.
Warner also says a great way to get awesome coupons is to subscribe for companies' emails. He says lots of businesses send out discounts that aren't available anywhere else.
