Saving money on refurnishing your home

DECATUR, Ga. -

When times are tough and you're trying stretch your dollar, buying a new chair or artwork for your home is probably the last thing on your mind. But you don't have to spend a lot of cash to furnish your home.

At Kudzu Antiques in Decatur, there are tons of examples of how items can be given new life with some hard work and a little imagination. Owner George Lawes' motto is "re-buy, re-use, re-purpose." From the old work bench turned into a sofa table to the wine bottles transformed into trendy candles, there is no shortage of incredible finds in his market.

George Lawes offered some tips on how to find items at yard sales or flea markets that have potential.

"What you want to look for are bones, good lines, good structure, whether it's a chair or a table. And if it's covered up with dirt and cobwebs that can be cleaned away," said Lawes. "What you want to find is something really unique, different, and fun."

Karen Graham set out to find her own unique treasure and at the first yard sale she went to, she was successful. She found a great lamp for $5.00 and a leather chair for $20.00.

Lawes showed Karen some tips on how to change the lamp's shade and gave some suggestions on how to paint the base. For the leather chair he rubbed on Howard's Restore-A-Finish, and magically wiped away the scuffs on the legs. He suggested using any regular leather cleaner on the leather seat and back. Karen finished the chair herself and painted the lamp base.

Both pieces are now great additions to her home, for only $25.00.
