MADISON COUNTY, Ga. -

An 11-year-old girl spent days in intensive care after being bitten by a copperhead in Comer, Ga.

Savannah Chandler said she was walking to a friend's tire swing at a home when the snake attacked her two weeks ago.

"I stepped down and it raised up," said Savannah.

She ran inside and told her friend's mother, Kendra Wilson, who called 911.

"She told me she had been bitten by a snake and it was brown," said Wilson."I was petrified."

Wilson said she put a tourniquet on Chandler's leg, which was quickly swelling and turning purple.

Wilson said that a paramedic and her son returned to the yard to search for the snake. They found it under a chair. The paramedic killed the snake and brought it via helicopter to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta– with Savannah.

"I wouldn't look at it. I just was scared of it," said Savannah.

Experts said that snakes could be more visible in the summer months. If bitten, they said don't try to remove the venom yourself. MadisonCounty EMS Director Jason Lewis said seek help as quickly as possible.

Savannah spent a couple of days in the hospital and was released. Her mother said that doctors have assured the family that there are not going to be any long-term medical effects from the bite.
