ATLANTA -
The
powerful cold front that sparked three consecutive days of violent
storms in the central and southern Plains is now making its move towards
north Georgia. While
the upper level support for the strongest storms will steer north of
Georgia, far northwest Georgia may be grazed by severe storms that will
pack frequent lightning, gusty winds, and large hail.
The areas favored
for these more intense storms include: Rome,
Dalton, Calhoun, and Ellijay. Elsewhere, strong storms may stay below
severe levels, but will still bring heavy downpours and frequent,
dangerous lightning. Storm should develop and become numerous after 2
or 3 p.m. this afternoon.
Until then, partly
to mostly cloudy skies will prevail with temperatures warming into the
low to mid 80s. Scattered storms will last from late afternoon through
much of the night, but the front should push far enough east of the area
to shut down the rain before sunrise Thursday.
Storm total rainfall will average 1/10th
to ¼" for most areas, but the heaviest downpours could dump a full inch
of rain in some areas.
Drier weather takes over Thursday and humidity
will take a noticeable dip by Saturday
and Sunday. This buys us a beautiful Memorial Day weekend with
sunshine, lows in the 50s, and highs near 80.
