Authorities say a newborn baby died at a hospital after being born in a Clayton County jail.
The inmate prematurely gave birth on Saturday morning in a jail bathroom. Authorities rushed the mother and child to the hospital, where the infant died.
Clayton County Sheriff Kem Kimbrough says deputies did nothing wrong as they handled the birth.
"The medical assistance responsibility is to get there as soon as possible and all evidence points to that happening in this case," said Kimbrough.
Kimbrough said authorities responded within minutes.
One woman said that she was in the jail a year ago and saw two other inmates miscarry and jailers slow to respond.
"Instead of answering people's questions, they'll see you pressing the button and they will just sit there and listen to you press on the intercom and talk on it all day long and still not even come out of the tower or anything," said the woman, who asked not to be identified.
Kimbrough says he is unaware of the incidents that the woman talked about. He also insists that in all cases of inmates sounding the alarm that they are ill, his deputies responded quickly.
The sheriff insists that a nurse screens all inmates when they come into the jail and then there's a more extensive screening for inmates who stay up to 14 days. She said the mother in this weekend's incident was seen two days before giving birth.
"There were some medical issues noted in her history that could have played a bigger role in this than anything going on in the jail," Kimbrough said.
The sheriff says the mother was released after her court appearance on Monday.
Kimbrough says the woman did not file any complaints to authorities about the death of her child.
