Not too many candidates for the state Legislature can enlist a former president to go stumping door-to-door.
But Jason Carter waited a while before enlisting his famous grandparents, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, to help him campaign. Grandma and grandpa had asked for some time to help, but Jason Carter wanted to prove he could do the hard work on his own.
The 34-year-old lawyer finally allowed his grandparents to come out Saturday, with a special election for a vacant state Senate seat just days away. Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter walked the sidewalks of a tree-lined Atlanta neighborhood looking for votes.
If he wins on Tuesday, Carter, a Democrat, would become the first in his family to be elected to political office since his grandfather won the presidency in 1976.
