4th graders shave heads in support of classmate

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -

A group of fourth grade boys shaved their heads in support of a fellow classmate in Johns Creek.

For the fourth grade boys in a class at Perimeter School, shaving their heads was something that just had to be done when they learned a classmate with cancer would lose her own hair to chemotherapy.

"I was feeling like what's she going to look like, what can I do to help," said Michael Mele.

Mele's friend, 10-year-old Bailey Moody, was diagnosed with bone cancer six weeks ago. When Michael found out she was going to lose her hair, he and his friend Collin didn't want her to feel alone.

"We know she was going to be losing her hair and we were thinking of a way to help her and we knew she was going to lose all her hair, so we thought if we got all the boys to shave their heads and show support," said Mele.

Almost 30 10-year-olds took part, not only shaving their heads, but praying for Bailey. But a first-grader – Bailey's little brother Luke -- was the first one up.

"When I found out my sister had cancer, then my mom told me that a bunch of other boys were doing it -- I decided I wanted to do it to," said Luke Moody.

Luke and Bailey's grandfather, David Smith, say it was amazing to see the show of solidarity and fervent prayers.

"It was touching and great support for Bailey and the whole family," said Smith.

"When she looked at everyone, she was, like, very happy and almost in tears," said Michael.

Bailey loves Auburn, so the girls and the boys wear orange hats every day at school.

Bailey is on her way back to Atlanta from treatment in Florida.
