SNELLVILLE, Ga. - Police said thieves were caught on surveillance video at a Snellville Wal-Mart the day they were arrested for burglaries spanning three states. Police described said the male thieves were wearing women's clothes.
Snellville police said the two men dressed as women were part of a crew of six. Investigators said the crew is responsible for as many as a dozen burglaries all over the southeast.
Investigators said two men wearing women's clothing, makeup and wigs and carrying floppy purses were caught in surveillance video last month at the Snellville Wal-Mart store. Police said the men were part of a crew of six, including two other men and two women, who stole dozens of high-end cell phones from the store.
"They were in and out so quickly it left little time for police to apprehend them," said Det. Eric Washburn of the Snellville Police Department.
Snellville police say that in less than two months, the six ripped off cell phones from Wal-Mart stores in Talladega, Florida, Snellville and three other metro Atlanta locations and Boaz, Alabama.
"Approximately 20 to 30 cell phones were taken in each theft and those cell phones range from $350 to $600 a piece," said Det. Washburn.
Detective Washburn says in one day, the group hit five stores in seven hours.
The thieves were finally stopped in Boaz, Alabama as they tried to get away.
Police arrested the six, and released mug shots of four including a woman, a man and the two men wearing wigs and makeup.
"This one particular group chose a very different style to be using while going in to the store, actually led to an easier arrest for the police departments involved," said Det. Washburn.
Snellville police say the ring of alleged thieves has confessed to the series of rip offs. They also said the suspects could also be extradited back to Georgia.
