FULTON COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - There are 1,200 unsolved murder cases in Fulton County and Thursday night, investigators said they were taking bold steps to try and solve them. Playing cards featuring Fulton County cold cases are being passed around the jail in hopes that inmates will have information on the cases.

Each one of the cards tells the story of a murder and they are unsolved cold cases.

District Attorney Paul Howard said he hoped that dealing out the cards at the county jail will change that.

Each one of these cards has the picture and story of a murder victim in an unsolved crime in Fulton County. They were passed out to prisoners in the Fulton County Jail.

The idea came from the Fulton County Cold Case squad. The hope is that someone will see a victim, or sees the circumstances on one of the cards, remembers, sees it and gives police information.

"The theory is that many of these inmates might have some connection to these unsolved homicides," said Howard.

Only one of the cards was assigned to a specific murder case. The queen of hearts was assigned to Nacole Smith. Smith was killed while walking to school in 1995. She was only 14.

The cold case squad and the Fulton DA office have gone to great lengths to solve Smith's murder.

In 2005, investigators recreated the crime scene 10 years after the murder in hopes of gaining new insight. Billboards plastered pictures of the suspect, but it was all to no avail.

Smith's mother said she appreciated the ingenuity of investigators.

Howard said he hopes to get the cards distributed to inmates at the state prison in Jackson next and then to all the prisons throughout Georgia.

Anyone with information that can help solve a Fulton County cold case is asked to call 1-888-OLD-TIPS.
