ATLANTA, Ga. - An Atlanta mother says she’s upset about the way a local elementary school handled a medical emergency with her son. The 8-year-old boy suffered an allergic reaction to peanut butter, and it's how the school reacted that has his mother so upset.
That third grader was put in an ambulance and sent to the hospital without anyone from the school or anyone he knew riding with him. That's against school policy, and has the young boy's mother demanding answers.
Jameun Bryant has a peanut allergy, and just touching that peanut butter at Adamsville Elementary was enough to trigger it. His mom says he broke out in hives.
It's how the school responded that has Jameun's mother so upset. She says they waited too long to call 911.
Atlanta public school officials say the school did call 911 as soon as they realized there was a problem.
Where the school district and Bryant both agree something went wrong was with the ambulance.
Nobody from the school accompanied 8-year-old Jameun to the hospital.
Atlanta public schools say they are investigating, and the next step is to make sure school personnel know what the correct procedures are so a mistake doesn't happen again.
