CANTON, Ga. - Hundreds of people gathered at a Canton church on Saturday to say a final farewell to a 7-year-old girl who was brutally murdered. An emotional public funeral service was held for Jorelys Rivera at First Baptist Church.
Friends, family and strangers packed the church for the service on Saturday afternoon. The funeral was followed by the release of doves. On Friday night, the family received roughly 1,000 people in a public viewing , which was followed by a candlelight vigil at a local park.
Jorelys Rivera was reported missing on December 2. Police found her body several days later in a trash bin from the River Ridge Apartments in Canton, where her family lives. Ryan Brunn, a 20-year-old maintenance worker at the complex , was later arrested and charged with Jorelys’ murder.
A family member told FOX 5 that Jorelys’ parents were planning to speak at Saturday’s service, but they were too emotional when the time came. But as funeral home personnel were escorting them back to the funeral home for a private service, Jorelys’ mother stopped to speak to the media.
Through a translator, Jorelys’ mother told reports that she wanted to thank those who supported her, and the investigators who worked so hard to solve her daughter’s murder and make an arrest. She said the situation has been painful for her family, but she is glad that people have been there for her.
Family and friends who attended the funeral wore white t-shirts with Jorelys picture on the front. Pink flowers covered the white coffin that carried Jorelys’ body. Her family plans to have her remains flown to Puerto Rico, where they will hold a private memorial service before Jorelys’ burial.
