BUFORD, Ga. - A Buford dentist is spreading a healthy dose of holiday cheer to patients who weren’t expecting it. In return, those patients say they’ve been inspired to pay it forward and help others in need.
It might be common for your dentist to present you with a new toothbrush, some dental floss or a tube of toothpaste when you visit. But most patients would hardly expect to have their dentist knocking on their front door offering them a very generous gift.
Dr. Ashley Curington says during Christmas, it feels like the right time to do just that. She has been practicing dentistry for 17 years, but this year, she started a new practice. It’s something she calls Random Acts of Elfness.
Everyday since Thanksgiving, Dr. Curington has given a special gift to a randomly selected patient. At first, there were just a few very generous options, like iPads, braces, and trips to the beach. But then, she expanded the giving to include the gift of cosmetic and restorative dental care.
Last week, Dr. Curington surprised 13-year-old Ian Black at home. She gave him $100 for his savings account, and a full set of braces that she’s paying for after she extracts his four wisdom teeth for free. She also gave Ian’s mother a little cash to cover her bills and pay for their holiday expenses.
The “Random Acts of Elfness” are posted on YouTube, and Dr. Curington says what has been more rewarding than the acts alone is how her patients are sharing the love.
Dr. Curington says the YouTube posts came after her patients said they wanted to share their Random Acts of Elfness with friends and family. She says some patients whose names were drawn have actually declined the gift she offered, insisting she give it to another patient who really needs it.
