ATLANTA, Ga. - While Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and city workers continue to battle it out over the pension system, Atlanta firefighters think they've come up with a solution to the problem. They’re suggesting a new tax on commuters.
On Wednesday, firefighters and their representatives met with the Atlanta City Council's finance committee. Firefighters suggested implementing a parking tax in the city for non-residents. This way, the city could raise the revenue it needs and keep its promise to pay workers their pension.
Mayor Reed says the current pension plan has the city $1.5 billion in the red. Atlanta's chief operating officer Peter Aman says raising taxes is not an option.
