ATLANTA (MyFOX Atlanta) - There are new charges surrounding the case of an Atlanta man who died in the custody of East Point Police. Detectives said a woman they have interviewed has now been cited for leaving the scene of an accident. However, the victim's family said the chain of events just doesn't add up.
Rodney Winfrey's family has so many questions and too few answers about how the 33-year-old died Friday night in East Point police custody.
"I want to know what happen to my son. Word on the street is that he was beaten by police," said the victim's mother, Edith.
Winfrey's mother Edith said she's questioning the explanation police are giving her. The department released a statement saying Mr. Winfrey was darting in and out of traffic on State route 166 at the intersection of Stanton Road. Police say he had injuries to his arm and legs. The family says they were told he was hit by a car.
"If a man is hit by a car, and they saw injuries on his arm and legs, why is he in handcuffs?" said Edith.
Officer's said, "In an attempt to curtail Mr. Winfrey's continual attempts to enter traffic, officers were forced to restrain him with handcuffs."
The statement goes on to say, while Mr. Winfrey was being treated by EMS, he "became unresponsive and was transported to South Fulton Medical Center where he expired.
East Point police called the GBI in to investigate. The agency has promised an independent probe.
"I might have confidence in them. I'm not sure at this point," said Edith.
The Fulton County medical examiner has completed the autopsy, but Winfrey's cause of death is pending toxicology results.
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard has also been asked to take a look at this case.
Four East Point officers are on paid administrative leave.
