JONESBORO, Ga. - There have been many stories in which everyday citizens are forced to defend themselves.
That includes a Duluth woman who shot and killed an intruder in her home.
That begs the question: what would you do if faced with a threatening situation?
It's not something you want to think about, but facing a scenario where you have to defend yourself is not something you want to sneak up on you either.
Combat Hard in Jonesboro makes it a mission to ensure anyone can be prepared.
"I'm not beating anybody up, but I'm also not going to be a victim. I think if someone came up to me and was aggressive, I don't think I would freeze. I think I would actually react to it," said self defense student Sue Grisham.
One of the many classes taught here is "Krav Maga." It's the Israeli form of fighting that doesn't stress the perfect kick, but effective moves that are readily recalled, like the groin kick.
The self defense classes stress being able to defend yourself at a moment's notice. And that takes planning and confidence. Instructors acknowledge that women typically shy away from confrontation and it's why Michelle Pike says she signed up to learn some basic techniques -to gain a new instinct.
"I'm a single mom, so with myself and my daughter it gives me that little extra bit of confidence that I didn't have before," said self defense student Michelle Pike.
The people here at Combat Hard say guns aren't necessarily something you need to be afraid of. You just practice proper safety techniques and have to practice using them.
"This gun is going to do you no good until you can get some space between us. I'm going to basically shove you away and create that distance and now I can draw my weapon and you can't touch it. This gun is real effective at this range," said Jon Minnihan of Combat Hard.
Instructors say unfortunately, we live in world where we might have to face acts of violence. How you react is key.
"You don't want to be that sheep. You don't want to be sitting in the herd, I'm in a crowd I'm safe. You want to be that tiger. You want to be out there and be aggressive at a minute's notice," said Minnihan.
