ATLANTA (MyFOX ATLANTA) - You've heard of bomb sniffing dogs but how about peanut sniffing dogs? There are pooches trained to sniff out everything from soy products to peanut butter and like bomb sniffing dogs, they're doing it to help save lives.
Besides peanuts, the service dogs can also be trained to sniff other potential allergens such as soy, wheat, tree nuts and dairy products.
The dogs investigate just like bomb sniffing dogs.
The service dogs are used for kids who have extreme allergies.
It takes about six months to train a dog and they're about 95 percent accurate, but not perfect. Trainers caution that families still need to do be on guard and the dog should be the last line of defense.
