PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. (MyFOX ATLANTA) - It was an accident that threatened to change his life forever, but an 18-year-old Pickens County teen is now recovering after three surgeries. Michael Ferguson strolled through the Fernbank Museum of Natural History in a therapy session Thursday. The visit to an unlikely setting is helping Ferguson gain his independence and nothing short of a miracle.

In February, the 18-year-old was in a car accident that broke nearly every bone in his face. Slowly, Ferguson is piecing his life back together.

Part of Ferguson's recovery is of course physical therapy, but Thursday's session was held in a decidedly historic setting at the Fernbank Museum.

"We want to get them up and going, independence is a huge part of that," said physical therapist Julia Hagar.

"Being in the bed all the time, I can't take that. I'm a very active person," said Ferguson.

Ferguson and his family credits the staff at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Ferguson's own confidence in getting back on his feet. Even amongst artifacts of the past, Ferguson said is sure about his future.

"It's been tough. It's very irritating, very painful, very, you know, very painstaking. Other than that, I know I can pull through," said Ferguson.

After weeks of intense inpatient therapy, Ferguson will be going home to Pickens County Friday.
